Promoting the benefits of public transport in a world made by 'Traffic in Towns'

The Colin Buchanan consultancy is synonymous with Traffic in Towns, the 1963 report that recommended boosting road infrastructure to accommodate rising car ownership levels but today, as director Malcolm Buchanan explains, much of the company’s work involves convincing clients that public transport is what they really need

The Colin Buchanan consultancy business went ‘international’ virtually overnight after the publication of the seminal Traffic in Towns report in the mid-1960s by the company’s eponymous founder, according to his son, Malcolm Buchanan, who is now a director at the company. “The British consultancy tradition is huge [overseas],” he notes. “But Colin Buchanan didn’t have a tradition of working anywhere [outside the UK] until Traffic in Towns.”
