Free school transport must be scaled back to tackle soaring costs, says council

Westmorland and Furness Council has proposed cuts to non-statutory free transport for schoolchildren in a bid to address rising costs.

The Cumbrian authority describes school transport as a key area of expenditure, rising from £15.3m in 2023/24 to a projected out-turn of £19.6m in 2025/26.
