The European Commission is rethinking plans that would force car manufacturers to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from new vehicles after manufacturers said the proposals threatened Europe's car industry.
Environment minister Stavros Dimas has been pressing for legislation that would require manufacturers to cut CO2 emissions to an average of 120 grammes per km by 2012. Dimas says legislation is needed because the voluntary agreement to reduce emissions to 140 grammes by 2008 will fail....
