Irish Government considers tendering bus routes

The Irish Government is considering introducing a limited measure of bus franchising.

The industry is currently dominated by the two state-owned loss-making giants, Dublin Bus and Bus Eireann. In 2012 they incurred respective losses of €3.8m and €6.2m. Both companies are subsidiaries of the state holding company, CIE, which last year received €36m state support. Up to 10% of routes could be put out to tender as early as next year.
