Vehicle excise duty as an environmental tax

'Be more bullish about green taxes'

A committee of MPs has urged the Government to develop a more effective communications strategy for green taxation measures such as fuel duty and vehicle excise duty.

The House of Commons environmental audit committee supports the Government's controversial plan to introduce new VED rates from next April based on carbon dioxide emissions for cars registered since 2001 (LTT 21 Mar) and rejects suggestions that this amounts to retrospective taxation.
