Prices that local authorities are being asked to pay for tendered bus contracts have risen sharply, as a result of multiple new pressures on operators. An LTT sample survey also revealed shortages of operators and vehicles, and of local authorities failing to meet their statutory duty to provide free home to school transport for all entitled students every school day. The large reduction in private-hire coach trips since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic is contributing to the difficulties.
