M6 Carlisle to Guards Mill extension, Cumbria/Dumfries and Galloway

The Highways Agency has announced that a public inquiry will be held this autumn into the proposed M6 Carlisle to Guards Mill extension. The 9km section of the A74 between Gretna, east of Annan and Houghton, north of Carlisle, will be widened to become a dual three-lane motorway and a parallel single carriageway road built for local non-motorway traffic. The 230-metre Mossband viaduct, over the West Coast Main Line railway, will be demolished and an embankment built to accommodate the motorway...
