Environment secretary Michael Gove has promised a ban on the sale of new conventional petrol and diesel cars and vans from 2040.
Gove said a ban was essential to address pollution concerns and ensure the UK meets its Climate Change Act target to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 80% against 1990 levels by 2050.
The ban would cover sales of new pure petrol/diesel models. Hybrid vehicles would be unaffected.
The French Government announced a similar ban and date last month.
