An increasing number of local authority maintained road bridges are substandard, according to a council survey by the RAC Foundation and the national bridges group of ADEPT (the Association of Directors of Environment, Economics, Planning and Transportation).
The Foundation estimates that 3,203 bridges across Britain are sub-standard, many having weight restrictions and others being closely monitored. It says this represents about 4.4% of the roughly 72,000 bridges on the local road network....
