Gateshead Council is pressing ahead with a targeted approach to implementing 20mph speed limits, saying a “blanket” application of signed-only limits will fail to achieve the desired reduction in vehicle speeds.
Councillors approved plans in 2010 to implement 20mph limits at 155 locations in town centres, outside schools, and in residential areas with existing traffic calming. Eighty schemes have now been implemented at a cost of £1.3m.
