The North East Combined Authority (NECA) will meet next week to make a final decision on whether to endorse an elected mayor for the area, with uncertainty still surrounding how the arrangements will work given that Gateshead Council has rejected the plan.
NECA was set up last year and covers the five metropolitan districts of Tyne and Wear (Newcastle, Gateshead, North Tyneside, South Tyneside and Sunderland) plus Durham and Northumberland county councils.
