The Association of Directors of Environment, economy, Planning and Transport has urged the highway authorities not making available their data on road works through a national website to do, as the DfT backed the initiative.
Roadworks.org has live data feeds from 100 local highway authorities and the Highways Agency covering more than 80% of England and Wales. The number of road works published on the roadworks.org website passed the two million per year mark this week and the information has been accessed more than one million times in less than a year by road users and councils and utilities.
Tony Ciaburro, chair of the ADEPT Transport group said: “ADEPT recognises the importance of exploiting technology to help make informed decisions on how, when and where to travel. The website and service provided by ELGIN goes a long way towards achieving this goal. However, for such a service to be fully effective, it really needs all authorities to be engaged and ADEPT encourages this participation in what is a fully regulated, non-exclusive and free to join service.”
Norman Baker, local transport minister, said: "The roadworks.org website makes it easier for motorists to see what roadworks are happening and where so that they can plan an alternative route and also see when work is scheduled to end."
