A new road connecting the M6 north of Carlisle with the A595 Wigton Road to the west of the city has significantly cut vehicle trips through Carlisle city centre, according to Cumbria County Council. The five-mile Carlisle Northern Development Route opened a year ago and has been used by 4.4 million vehicles at its busiest point.
