London's trams are growing, but UK still lags behind Europe

Britain’s tramway systems lag behind those in mainland Europe but at least some are growing. Six new trams at London Tramlink have enabled service frequencies to increase by 50% over the busiest section of routes centred on Croydon, south London. Tramlink currently carries 29 million passengers per year, up 45% from the figures in 2000, when it opened, without any increase in network length.

The new Variobahn trams cost £16.3m (of which £3m was contributed by Croydon Council)...
