Transport Secretary Philip Hammond this week attempted to dilute opposition to the proposed London-West Midlands high-speed rail line (HS2) by announcing changes to the design of the route. He also announced details of how and when Heathrow Airport could be served by high-speed rail and outlined how HS2 would connect into High Speed 1 and the Channel Tunnel.
