Transport secretary Ruth Kelly visited the West Midlands this week to hail the success of the M42 Active Traffic Management project. She was also expected to announce the expansion of ATM to other sections of England's motorway network.
Active Traffic Management was implemented on the M42 between junctions 3A (M40) and 7 (M6) in September 2006 and includes variable speed limits, hard shoulder running in peak periods, and emergency refuge areas.
