Proponents of all modes of transport have been

keen to promote their 'green' credentials

recently. Public transport advocates claim that

it is a good thing because it is more environ-

mentally friendly than the private car. The car industry

says that motoring is getting greener because of better

fuel efficiency and new fuel technologies. Aviation lob-

byists say that they are also developing more fuel effi-

cient planes and areaccepting the need to be part of

the European Emissions...
