Graduated speeding penalties included in road safety Bill

The Government is to press ahead with implementing a graduated system of punishments for speeding motorists, despite opposition from road safety campaigners, some councils and MPs.

The proposal was included in the road safety Bill published this week following a consultation exercise this summer (LTT 9 Sep).

The change would see the three points and £60 fine for exceeding a 30mph limit reduced to two points and a £40 fine if motorists broke the limit by up to 9mph. Motorists...
