An overhead electrification system that could allow diesel freight trains to be phased out is being trialled in Northamptonshire. The project, Decarbonisation & Electrification of Freight Terminals (DEFT), was funded by the DfT and Innovate UK. 

Freight trains are typically loaded and unloaded from above, preventing the use of the high voltage overhead cables used on mainline railways.
