Highways England has invited tenders for the first of three contracts to deliver the Lower Thames Crossing, which will provide a new road tunnel connecting Thurrock with Kent.
The project, with a cost range of £5.3bn-£6.8bn, is intended to support economic growth and relieve capacity at the Dartford crossings, the two bored tunnels and the QEII bridge that carry M25 road traffic across the Thames.
Opening is expected in 2027 or 2028.
