Axe HS2 and upgrade existing lines instead, says Berkeley

Lord Berkeley, who was deputy chair of the Government’s review into HS2, thinks ministers should scrap most of the project and focus instead on upgrading existing lines in the Midlands and the North. Andrew Forster reports

When transport secretary Grant Shapps appeared before the House of Commons transport committee last autumn he said no one would be able to call the Government’s review of the HS2 project a whitewash because it was led by Doug Oakervee, a former chair of HS2 Ltd, and its deputy chair was Lord Berkeley, one of the most vocal critics of the project (LTT 25 Oct 19).
