Gatwick plans routine use of ‘standby’ runway

Gatwick Airport has announced plans to effectively add a second runway by converting an existing ‘standby’ runway to operational status once a planning agreement in place since 1979 comes to an end next year. As part of its latest draft master plan the airport says that it “could potentially bring our existing standby runway into routine use for departing flights, alongside the main runway, by the mid-2020s”.
