Transport secretary Chris Grayling has written to the Rail Delivery Group and trade unions representing rail workers, calling on them to reduce wage inflation in the industry.
Grayling’s intervention came as the retail price index (RPI) for July was announced as 3.2 per cent. The Government uses the July RPI figure to set regulated rail fare increases next January for most of England.
