Rachel Aldred is quite right to ask for more attention to be paid to reducing traffic volumes as well as speeds, but not to suggest that the effect of reducing capacity on traffic volumes has only recently been recognised (ibid). This subject was discussed in my book Towns against Traffic published in 1972, which, among other things, referred to the account given by Jane Jacobs in her 1964 book The Death and Life of Great American Cities of how reducing traffic capacity in Washington Square...
