When HS2 arrives, rail freight can use alternative routes

Chris Stokes shouldn’t worry about capacity for freight trains north of Preston when HS2 eventually opens (Letters LTT 16 Oct). The freight companies’ locomotives are predominately diesel and the Settle and Carlisle, and Carlisle-Dumfries-Kilmarnock-Glasgow routes are better graded than the West Coast Main Line, particularly for northbound trains.
