Network Rail has ruled out investing in a new rail route between London and Brighton in the short to medium term, saying capacity can instead be increased by a set of more incremental improvements at the London end of the line.
The finding is a blow to the Brighton Main Line 2 campaign group, which has been championing doubling the Oxted to Uckfield line and building a new railway from Uckfield to Falmer, east of Brighton, with a link also to Lewes (LTT 21 Mar).
