East of England residents have longest commutes

The average distance people in England and Wales commute to work grew between 2001 and 2011 but the number of workers making a regular commute fell, according to Census analysis published by the Office for National Statistics. 

Average distance travelled increased in all English regions and Wales, with commuters in the Midlands and South West recording the biggest rise in distance between 2001 and 2011  of 2.2km (just under 1.5 miles).
