An hourly rail service between Southport and Ormskirk has been backed in Network Rail's draft route utilisation strategy for Lancashire and Cumbria. The new service would require the reinstatement of the Burscough Chord South. The strategy also supports an hourly Preston-Ormskirk service but rules out electrification of the Ormskirk to Preston line that would allow direct Preston - Liverpool services.
