Nottingham’s smartcards show folly of bus deregulation

The Guardian is of course right in advocating that use of smart cards on public transport should be promoted by local authorities (‘Guardian calls for UK-wide travel smartcard’ LTT 25 Jan). But one of the many evils of bus deregulation is that a provincial local authority (unlike London) cannot impose a decree ‘let there be smart cards’ on a bus company not willing to co-operate.
