Folly of bus deregulation is seen on McLoughlin’s doorstep

Fifty per cent of all English bus journeys are made in London even though it has only about 15 per cent of the population. It is therefore not surprising that even a Conservative-led government is now contemplating giving London-style bus regulatory powers to Greater Manchester (‘Government will back bus QCs for Gtr Manchester in return for elected mayor’ LTT 14 Nov).  Even less surprising are the calls from Labour MPs that other urban areas should have similar powers.
