Economic restructuring could explain the slowdown in car use

As usual I read Phil Goodwin’s latest piece with interest and delight; he never fails to intrigue but in this instance I was further impressed by his subtle (?) attempt to have LTT readers do Scott Levine’s work for him... and yes, I have fallen for the bait like I expect have so many others! So, why the drop in the rise in car use since 1990 or so?

I feel that the answer could well lie outside ‘transport’; on the big issues it is always best to remember that...
