When a straight line is not the surest path

Car traffic has not been rising as rapidly of late as it did in the preceding half century and we need to think harder about why this is so

The word for ‘straight’ comes from ‘stretched, and ‘line’ comes from ‘linen’, referring to the building arts of the ancients. A taut string is used on building sites to this day, as there simply isn’t a simpler and more practical method. Straight lines are at the heart of geometry, perspective, navigation, and optics. And snooker? Well, that’s the point really – straight lines can be bent, curved, refracted, stopped and re-thought...
