National Grid threatens to end hope of Woodhead re-opening

Ministers are being urged to halt plans to lay electricity cables through the disused three-mile long trans-Pennine Woodhead Tunnel - a move that would end any hope of it reopening as a rail route.

National Grid plc, which bought the tunnel in 1993, plans to begin work later this year on a two-year project to install new electric cables through the tunnel. The cables will replace those currently running through one of the older parallel tunnels, which National Grid says are coming to the end of...
