Newcastle City Council last week granted planning permission for the replacement of Haymarket station, on the Metro line between Jesmond and Monument stations. The existing 1980-built station will be demolished and a new station incorporated into the Haymarket shopping complex. Facilities will include: a travelshop; the replacement of a passenger lift; a third escalator to replace stairs; CCTV; and a new public address system. Work could start next March and take 18 months to complete....
