A suggestion by the Conservative party that vehicles should be allowed to turn left at red traffic signals has been widely criticised by safety groups and opposition parties.

The idea - which the Tories suggest would improve road capacity and cut congestion in London - was part of a transport plan put forward as "interim thinking" by the party's economic competitiveness policy group, chaired by former shadow environment secretary John Redwood.
