Cyclists portrayed as both aggressors and the victims of motorists’ rage

One columnist focused on the bad behaviour of some male bike riders whereas a second highlighted the abuse aimed at female cyclists by predominantly male motorists.

Two very different perspectives on the country’s cyclists appeared in the media in late September/early October. On 27 September, for example, Eastern Daily Press business editor Richard Porritt asked rhetorically if “Some cyclists [are] just yobs in tight shorts?”

“Why aren’t more people willing to ditch their cars and cycle around East Anglia?” he went on. “Perhaps the disgusting behaviour of some cyclists is the real reason.”
