Countdown is popular and safe, says TfL

Transport for London introduced the first pedestrian countdown indicators as a trial in 2010 and has gone on to install them at more than 1,400 locations in the capital – over 800 traffic signal junctions, with the remainder at standalone pedestrian crossings.
