Rail consumes 54% of UK transport spend

The railways consumed 54% of UK public expenditure  on transport in 2016/17 despite carrying only a fraction of the passenger and freight traffic. 

UK public expenditure on transport in the financial year 2016/17 was £29.1bn of which 54% (£16bn) went on rail. Of the remainder, 19% (£6bn) was spent on local roads, 14% (£4bn) on national roads, 8% (£2.3bn) on other public transport, and 5% on ‘other’ modes.
