Welsh council revamp: back to square one

The new Welsh Government is going back to the drawing board on plans to reduce the number of local authorities in Wales.

The previous Labour administration proposed replacing the 22 unitary authorities introduced in 1996 with eight or nine authorities, depending on whether two or three would cover North Wales. Only Powys, the large rural county in Mid Wales, would have retained its present shape.
