Labour MPs compete for transport committee chairmanship

A number of prominent Labour MPs are eyeing the chairmanship of the House of Commons transport select committee following the death of Gwyneth Dunwoody, who had held the post since Labour was elected to Government in 1997.

Among the MPs whose names have been associated with the position are former transport minister Stephen Ladyman and existing transport committee member Graham Stringer, the MP for Manchester Blackley.
