Road deaths rise in Northern Ireland

The number of people killed on Northern Ireland’s roads increased from 48 in 2012 to 56 last year, according to provisional figures prepared by the Police Service for Northern Ireland. The 48 deaths in 2012 was the lowest figure since records began in 1931. Until 2010 the number had never dropped below 100, with around 155 deaths a year throughout the 1990s. The number of people killed in crashes in the Irish Republic also rose last year, from 162 in 2012 to 189.
