New duty to compel councils to deliver walking and cycle routes

Local authorities in Wales look set to become the first in the UK to have a duty to deliver a network of walking and cycling routes under legislative plans published this week by the Welsh Government.

The Active Travel (Wales) Bill will require the 22 councils to identify and map a network of routes that are safe for walking and cycling – comprising both traffic-free routes and on-road provision.
