Use of Britain’s railways, as measured by passenger miles, is now at the highest level ever recorded in peace time.
Over 30 billion passenger miles were generated in 2007 and the railway carried 1.2 billion passengers - an increase of 7.8% on the passenger journeys made in 2006.
The previous record for passenger miles was 29 billion in 1946 when Britain was demobilising after world war two and the network was a third bigger than today.
