The Scottish government has informed the City of Edinburgh Council that it will withhold £72m of funding for the Edinburgh trams project, in light of the council's decision last week to build the route from the airport only as far as Haymarket. The route was shortened again because the council voted not to borrow the additional £231m required to build the line as far as St Andrew’s Square in the east of the city centre.
