Unite back IEP plans

Trade union Unite has urged the government to support Hitachi's bid for the £7.5bn Intercity Express Programme. The Japanese firm has chosen Newton Aycliffe in County Durham as the site where it intends to assemble the new train fleet. The union says that the programme would generate 800 direct jobs and a further 8,000 jobs in the supply chain.
