Serco and Abellio have secured a two-year extension to the Northern Rail franchise contract which they operate in a 50/50 joint venture. The extension was awarded as a result of the company comfortably exceeding undemanding performance targets which were set in 2004 at a time when the rail industry was struggling to achieve punctuality significantly above 80%.
