Election could scupper unitary council plans

English Local authorities affected by proposals for new unitary councils were seeking clarification this week on whether the new Conservative/Liberal Democrat coalition Government would be halting the plans.

The Conservative’s General Election manifesto committed the party to “scrapping Labour’s uncompleted plans to impose unwieldy and expensive unitary councils”.
