Virgin Trains has claimed that the Department for Transport’s decision to turn down its request for a two-year West Coast franchise extension will cost the taxpayer hundreds of millions of pounds.

The £300m package rejected by the DfT consisted of lengthening the existing 53-train fleet from nine to 11 carriages, modifying depots, extending platforms and increasing car parking space. Virgin offered to pay for the infrastructure projects and bear the risks associated with the train...
