With reference to Phil Goodwin's interesting article ('The rise and fall of a roads hierarchy' LTT 27 Sep) on the 'rise and fall' of road hierarchies, the logic of Alker Tripp's 1942 argument is, seemingly, that there should not be any shops or businesses fronting onto arterial roads. However, before the intervention of highway and town planning legislation, this is exactly where they did locate - as historic maps show - and where, arguably, they should once again be placed if we are to deliver...
