Fare increases to cut bus subsidy

Cheshire East Council plans to increase fares on some subsidised bus services in an effort to cut subsidy. “It is proposed that any service that requires less than 75p per journey subsidy becomes subject to negotiation with commercial operators to identify options for reducing taxpayer support,” Chris Williams, the council’s transport manager, told members. “For some services, a moderate increase in the fare charged would entirely eliminate the taxpayer subsidy...
